There’s a huge amount of information you can find on the internet. It’s unbelievable and it’s not necessary to visit any archives in person yet. Luckily Sophie agrees with me to schedule my field work on my own time and she understands I need to have some background information first. I must admit I feel embarrassed. I've never researched my birth country before and never have I imagined it could be fascinating and confusing at the same time.
First, I researched the political climate in the 70s. Nixon was president. It was the decade of Watergate in the US and Lockheed in the Netherlands. It was another kind of mess, which I am keen to figure out. I wasn’t born yet and those are the years I’ve always found interesting. The hippies, the flower power, the music and the way different groups were fighting for their rights. Like we are doing now. Continuing the work of our ancestors. Restore what went wrong. Will we ever get it right? Will we ever get the answers?Â
I don’t think so. I think when many answers will be discovered, many questions will unfold, which will create an amount of frustrations. Therefore I consider questioning as a constructive development in this research, every question on my way may lead me to the next journey towards another discovery.
The more I research on the internet, the more work I create for myself. To be honest, I don’t think I’ve reached the true rabbit hole yet. I’m not sure if I want to. For now, my days will be filled with documents about Nixon and next will be the Ford administration documents and then the years of Jimmy Carter. To be honest, I do enjoy doing this. Reading about the politics of one of the decades of the 20th century.Â
Maybe I can’t find my birth parents, but this may be another passion to develop into another writing expertise. Talking politics, using the knowledge of today to discover what may be the real deal of the pacts constructed in that time. I know there’s more to my story, I just need to find it.Â
No matter what.
With hope and passion,
Leya
